Also, OH MY GOD LET’S JUST REBLOG EVERYTHING! I HAVE NO OPINION OF MY OWN!
Maybe I’m just weird, but I don’t want to read about what other people think when I visit YOUR page.
I don’t ever use this site for anything. It’s layout is so confusing and I hate that it’s so streamlined and not like LJ. :<
I am graduating. I should look at this as a positive experience, especially being at the top of my class. However, in retrospect, I cannot say that I am any more intelligent than my peers. I can attest that I am only the best at doing what I am told and working the system.
I found this valedictorian speech pretty interesting. Mostly because I agree with the core of it. I couldn’t tell you very much about what I learned in my high school classrooms, mainly because I was conditioned to take tests that challenged my memorization rather than my knowledge and intelligence. I would have loved to have more classes that encouraged discussion and ideas rather than lectures you’re supposed to take notes on and memorize for tests. That’s where the real learning is.
I wouldn’t go as far as to say we were just “workers” in high school, though. I think in a sense, high school is there not just for the exams and quizzes, but for the social experience, too. It’s there for you to take in different perspectives. It’s there for you to pique your interest in something, whether it’s computers or an era of U.S. or world history. It’s too easy to get by doing the bare minimum (or even less), but you can’t retract the other values of schooling.
